I collaborated with Jon Dean (SVP of UX & Design) on the current version of the app and later with Alexis Lopez (Senior UX Designer) on additional features. Wesley Grose (Visual Designer) was responsible for all the chip images.

The previous version of Fox Sports Go featured image-based chips with a horizontal date selector bar. Even though it was well-received, we thought we could create a more user friendly interface, update the look and feel to be more in line with the Fox Sports App and FoxSports.com, and restructure the app to be able to accommodate new features and sections such as Search, Highlights, Replays, Multiview, and Chromecast.

We had a two-day brainstorming session with design, product, and dev to discuss all the various features we'd want to see in the app. The ideas were put to a vote, and I wireframed the top contenders. The initial MVP launch just included Live TV, Upcoming, and Search for mobile, tablet, and web. Additional features and sections were designed and rolled out over the following months, including Replays, Highlights, Shows, Chromecast and Multiview: the ability to stream four programs at once.

One feature users liked from our previous app was the ability to quickly jump from day-to-day. We thought we could improve on this feature by redesigning the horizontal date selector to be vertical. This allows the user to either tap to select a date, or continually scroll and have the date selector jump on its own when entering a new day. We also created two additional sections at the top of the page for Featured and Live content, to further help users find the best content.

Given the immense amount of content available in the app, it was very important for the user to have a quick way to find a specific program without having to scroll through multiple days’ worth of content.

I had to take a step back to tackle sign in and onboarding. This section was at a different stage during each phase of our app cycle with different designers working on different platforms. I redid and mapped out the journey for onboarding for Fox Sports Go, Fox Sports App, and FoxSports.com, across iOS, Android, Web, and Connected Devices.

To date, Fox Sports Go has had 32 million downloads across seven platforms, streamed two Super Bowls (XLVIII in 2014 and LI in 2017), and has been featured in iOS and Android app stores multiple times. Design-wise, it's been a roller coaster of a ride. It's evolved greatly over the past eight years and the following screens are a look at how it's changed.

Fox Sports Go was originally conceived as a robust video, scores, and news app with Gametrax built-in natively. This was before flat design became popularized and so our app took on a lot of Fox Sports' broadcast design elements. Ultimately this original version was killed during launch week due to technical challenges.
After version 1.0's heartbreaking demise, we decided to split Fox Sports Go into two apps: one that focused on videos and another that focused on scores. In order to release a promised working app to our users, we built a bare-bones MVP within a matter of weeks.
Afterward, we immediately started work on a design that would really put the focus on our vivid video streams. For the tablet, a horizontal scroll would allow the user to watch videos simultaneously while browsing through other content.
